Ajax's Lord Elgin Public School Renamed to Reflect Changing Historical Perspectives

From the exhibition "The Nineties: A Glossary of Migrations" https://www.muzej-jugoslavije.org/en/exhibition/devedesete-recnik-migracija/

The Durham District School Board has decided to rename Lord Elgin Public School, located in Ajax. This decision was made on January 22, when the board agreed to rename the school 'Ontario Street Public School.' The new name is set to be officially adopted at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year.

This name change is rooted in a reassessment of the historical legacy associated with the school's original namesake, James Bruce, the 8th Earl of Elgin, who was a former Governor General of Canada. The board's decision reflects a growing sensitivity to the historical connections of figures like Elgin to the establishment of the residential school system in Canada, which has been a subject of significant reevaluation and critique in recent years. Premier Doug Ford Advocates for Ongoing Tuition Freeze Amid Financial Concerns

Ontario Premier Doug Ford recently indicated his support for maintaining the current freeze on post-secondary tuition fees. Speaking to reporters, Ford expressed his reluctance to increase tuition at a time when students, especially those struggling financially, are facing economic challenges. He emphasized his government's past action of reducing tuition by 10% and pledged to support colleges and universities through efficiency drives.

Contrasting with the Premier's stance, the Council of Ontario Universities, in a letter dated Friday, requested the provincial government to end the tuition freeze and increase funding for educational institutions. The council's appeal comes in the wake of financial pressures faced by colleges and universities, particularly since the reduction and freezing of domestic tuition fees in 2019. This financial strategy also coincided with the cancellation of a free tuition program for low-income students.

The financial challenges for post-secondary institutions are further compounded by recent federal regulations. On January 22, the federal government announced a cap on student visas, reducing the number by 35% to approximately 360,000 in 2024. This decision could significantly impact the revenue generated from international students, who typically pay higher tuition fees than domestic students. Read more.

Durham Catholic Schools Considering Rescheduling PA Day for Solar Eclipse Safety

In response to the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, the Durham Catholic District School Board has is activley considering rescheduled a Professional Activity Day to coincide with the event. This decision will align with other boards in the eclipse's path, prioritizes the health and safety of students during the eclipse, which will occur between 2:00 pm and 4:30 pm, overlapping with student dismissal times.

A solar eclipse, where the moon completely obscures the sun, creates a rare spectacle but poses significant risks, particularly to eyesight. Direct observation without proper protection can lead to solar retinopathy, causing permanent retinal damage. During the eclipse, the Durham Region will experience a deep partial eclipse, with the peak darkness expected around 3:20 pm, raising concerns for student safety during dismissal.

To ensure the well-being of students and facilitate safe observation, the school board's proposed adjustment to the calendar is in line with Regulation 304 of the Education Act, which allows modifications to Professional Activity Days. Upon approval, this change will be communicated to all stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education and families, emphasizing the importance of safety during this unique astronomical event.
