Proposed Budget Seeks 4.9% Increase for Essential Services in Whitby

The proposed budget for the upcoming year suggests a 4.9% increase, aimed at maintaining essential services and accommodating growth. This increase translates to a 1.7% rise in the tax bill, amounting to roughly an additional 0.28 cents per day for each household. This increment is vital for the continuous provision of critical services like waste collection, snow clearing, and parks maintenance.

2024's budget is outlined in the '2024 Budget Highlights' publication, which also recaps the town's significant achievements in 2023 and outlines the major goals for 2024. Residents are encouraged to actively participate in the budgetary process through several upcoming opportunities.

A 'Virtual 2024 Budget Forum' is currently open until February 7, 2024, at ConnectWhitby.ca/Budget. Here, residents can conveniently provide their input online. Additionally, a 'Budget Public Meeting' is scheduled for February 5, 2024, at 7 p.m. This meeting offers another platform for public input, either in person at the Whitby Council Chambers or online. Those wishing to speak must register with the Town Clerk by 10 a.m. on the meeting day.

The finalization and approval of the budget will occur during a 'Special Council Meeting' on February 15, 2024, at 7 p.m. Participation options are similar to the public meeting, with registration required for those wishing to speak.

For more information on participation and speaking at council meetings, residents can visit whitby.ca/delegation.
