Durham Region Health Department Leads National Non-Smoking Week

The Durham Region Health Department is set to observe National Non-Smoking Week from January 21 to 27, aiming to encourage smokers to quit and to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use. This week has been a significant event across Canada for over 40 years, focusing on reducing the harm caused by tobacco, which remains the most preventable cause of death in the country. Approximately 16,000 Ontarians die each year due to tobacco use, which also incurs $11 billion in healthcare and indirect economic costs annually in Canada.

Recent research indicates that nearly 11% of Canadians aged 15 and older are cigarette smokers, totaling over three million people. Furthermore, among daily smokers, almost 35% attempted to quit for at least 24 hours. E-cigarettes are particularly concerning for youth and young adults, with 30% of Canadian youth aged 15 to 19 vaping, and almost 48% of young adults aged 20 to 24 engaging in the habit.

The Health Department offers numerous resources to assist those wishing to quit smoking and vaping, including:

  • Benefits of quitting and managing withdrawal symptoms and triggers

  • Personalized quit plans

  • Information on quit smoking medications and community supports

Additional community supports include:

  • CAMH's STOP on the Net Program: Offers free smoking cessation treatment and counseling, including a 10-week supply of nicotine replacement therapy.

  • Donโ€™t Quit Quitting website: Provides tips, tricks, and a Quit Calculator.

  • Stop Vaping Challenge App: A fun and social app for youth to quit vaping.

  • Quashapp.com: A cessation program for youth and adults aged 14 to 30, available in both English and French.

For more information on quitting smoking, vaping prevention, and protection from second-hand smoke and vapour, visit durham.ca/TobaccoAndVaping.
