Ontario Launches New Unit to Tackle Long-Term Care Non-Compliance

The Ontario government has launched a new Investigations Unit to enhance the quality of care and safety of residents in long-term care facilities. This initiative, backed by a $72.3 million investment, features a 10-person team specifically tasked to address severe non-compliance issues in long-term care homes.

The unit's primary focus is to investigate serious allegations such as abuse, neglect, non-compliance, suppression of mandatory reports, and negligence by corporate directors. Ontario's Minister of Long-Term Care, Stan Cho, emphasized that these investigators will add accountability to the sector and address severe forms of non-compliance.

The investigators have undergone a comprehensive 19-week training program, encompassing various aspects of inspections, legislation, investigative techniques, and court procedures. They are designated as Provincial Offences Officers under the Provincial Offences Act and will investigate offenses under the Fixing Long-Term Care Act. Their role is distinct from inspectors, as they focus on determining if an offense warranting prosecution has occurred.

This unit complements the existing inspections program and is part of a broader effort by the government to strengthen compliance in the long-term care sector. Other measures include doubling the number of field inspectors, implementing a new IT system for tracking work, and introducing new compliance tools like administrative monetary penalties. This initiative represents a commitment to ensuring that Ontario's seniors receive the care and quality of life they deserve. Read more.

Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre Sets $8 Million Goal for Vital Expansion

The Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre (Best Centre) in Whitby, Ontario, is embarking on an ambitious campaign to raise $8 million for the expansion and renovation of their facility. This campaign, known as the Building on the Best Expansion Campaign, was initiated in 2018 to meet the growing needs of patients living with life-threatening type 1 diabetes.

The Best Centre, having navigated the challenges of the pandemic, is now gearing up to begin the first phase of its expansion this coming fall. The rapid population growth in Durham Region has significantly increased the demand for healthcare services, including those provided by the Best Centre. Lorrie Hagen, the Executive Director of the Best Centre, has highlighted the pressing need for more space to continue providing high-quality care and to manage the growing demand for their unique community-based healthcare services. The revised fundraising goal of $8 million is a response to the inflated costs in the construction industry, a trend observed throughout the pandemic.
