Whitby's Nova’s Ark to Relocate Wolves, Pythons in Compliance with Bylaw
Nova’s Ark, a Whitby-based charity known for its animal-assisted therapy programs, has recently withdrawn its request for an exemption from the Town of Whitby's Prohibited and Regulated Animals Bylaw. This decision comes in light of a May 2023 inventory, which revealed that the charity was housing 74 animals that are not permitted under the town's regulations. This list included wolves, pythons, a lynx, serval, and bobcat.
The organization has committed to rehoming these prohibited animals to secure and suitable facilities as swiftly as possible. However, the majority of the animals at Nova’s Ark, including horses, donkeys, ponies, ferrets, pigs, and alpacas, comply with the bylaw and will continue to reside at the charity.
The move by Nova’s Ark demonstrates their willingness to cooperate with local regulations and their dedication to providing tailored therapy and programs to the community. The decision to rehome the prohibited animals underlines their commitment to both regulatory compliance and the welfare of the animals in their care. Read more.
Record Donations Mark the 35th Annual DRPS Food and Toy Drive
The 35th Annual Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Food and Toy Drive concluded successfully, marking another year of significant community contribution in the Durham Region. Renowned as one of Ontario's longest-running emergency service-led drives, this year's event faced the challenge of increased cost of living, leading to greater demands at food banks and charities.
In response to this challenge, the residents and businesses of Durham Region stepped up remarkably, resulting in a record-breaking amount of donations. The drive's impact was widespread: eight food banks received monetary support for their Christmas hamper programs, about 10 weekend events were organized, and around 3,000 stuffed toys were donated and distributed to 26 nursing homes, hospitals, and charities.
The drive saw participation from 74 businesses and schools, as well as 12 youth minor hockey teams. Volunteers played a crucial role, delivering food and toys to over 30 agencies and shelters. This extensive support enabled many charities to not only meet but exceed their assistance goals, with some even stockpiling food for future needs.
Cst. Darryl Rice, who has been instrumental in the drive for the last eight years, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to volunteers and community members for their generosity. Announcing his departure from leading the drive, he highlighted the invaluable contributions and friendships formed over the years. He lauded the volunteers as the true driving force behind the drive's success.
As Cst. Rice steps down, his commitment and countless volunteer hours over the past eight years have left an indelible mark on the drive's legacy, helping countless individuals and organizations in the region. Read more.
