School Closure at Eastdale Collegiate as Authorities Respond to Threat

Do Not Cross!

This morning, Eastdale Collegiate and Vocational Institute (@EastdaleCVI) received a concerning threat, prompting immediate action by school authorities. In response, they are collaborating closely with the Durham Regional Police Service (@DRPS) to address and manage the situation effectively. As a precautionary measure, the decision has been made to close the school temporarily. This closure is to ensure that emergency services have ample time and space to conduct a thorough investigation.

Parents and guardians are being advised not to send their children to school today. The safety of students and staff is of the utmost priority, and this closure is a necessary step in ensuring their well-being. The school will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves and more information becomes available. The community is encouraged to stay alert for further announcements regarding this incident.

Lynde House: A Journey Through Durham Region's Oldest Home and Its Rich History

Lynde House, renowned as the oldest home in Durham Region, holds a rich historical significance and serves as a window into the past. Originally positioned on a 200-acre farm near Lynde Creek on Dundas Street in Whitby, this Georgian-style house has witnessed substantial regional changes over the years.

Historical Background:

Founding Family: Jabez Lynde, a Loyalist, immigrated from Massachusetts and settled in Upper Canada with his wife, Clarissa Woodruff Lynde, in 1803. They were among the first settlers in the area.

Family Life: The Lynde family, including their eight children, lived in the house until 1893.

War of 1812 Role: During the War of 1812, the Lyndes played a crucial role by turning their home into an inn, tavern, and supply depot for British and First Nations militia, famously hosting General Isaac Brock.

Relocations of Lynde House:

First Move: In 1986, Lynde House was moved to Cullen Gardens.

Second Move: It found its permanent place at 900 Brock Street South in 2013, attracting thousands of spectators during the move.

Present-Day Museum:

Operated by the Whitby Historical Society, the Lynde House Museum is a cultural cornerstone, offering tours five days a week to visitors.

A notable feature is Clarissa Lynde’s Heritage Kitchen Garden. This garden, situated behind the house, comprises seven plots featuring a variety of plants, including medicinal herbs, vegetables like the Three Sisters, and plants used for decoration and dye making.

The harvested produce is utilized for educational purposes or donated, ensuring that the legacy of the Lynde family and the historical significance of the house continue to educate and engage the community.
