Lakeridge Health Receives Over $7.4 Million Boost from Ontario Government

Lakeridge Health is receiving over $7.4 million from the Ontario government for healthcare improvements. The funds are for the Surgical and DI Innovation and Efficiency Program and the Alternative Levels of Care and Patient Flows Initiatives. This investment aims to enhance surgical capacity, reduce hospital bed shortages, and improve patient flow in the Durham region.

Armed Duo Robs Pickering Credit Union, $15,000 Reward Offered

Two armed suspects are sought by police following a bank robbery at the Meridian Credit Union on Kingston Road in Pickering. The incident occurred on Thursday, December 8, around 7 p.m. The perpetrators, both wielding handguns, entered the bank and coerced the staff into surrendering cash. After herding the employees into the vault and seizing a sum of money, the duo fled the scene.

The first suspect is described as a 6-foot tall Black man with a slim build, clothed in a black tracksuit, black shoes, a construction vest, and a balaclava. The second suspect, also a Black man, stands around 5’8″ tall and was dressed in faded black jeans, red and white Jordan shoes, a dark sweater, a construction vest, and a ski mask.

In response to the robbery, Meridian Credit Union has announced a $15,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the involved individuals, marking an additional measure to safeguard its employees and members. Authorities are urging anyone with surveillance or dashcam footage from the area at the time of the robbery, or with new information, to contact the police at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5355, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). Tips can also be submitted online at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca, with potential eligibility for a $2,000 cash reward.

Community Encouraged to Double Their Impact in Cancer Care Campaign

The Lakeridge Health Foundation is close to achieving its $20 million 'Our Cancer' campaign goal. Two local families are offering to match donations up to $500,000 until December 31 to help reach and exceed the target, enhancing cancer care in Durham Region.

Whitby Shines Bright with Over 100,000 Festive Lights

Whitby Lights the Night. Whitby is embracing the festive season with a dazzling display of lights and decorations, transforming Whitby Civic Park, Celebration Square, and the downtown areas of Whitby and Brooklin into a winter wonderland. The town's seasonal festivities officially kicked off at Whitby Civic Park, located at 555 Rossland Road East, on November 24, 2023, where the community gathered to join Santa in a grand "light the night" event.

Residents and visitors alike can immerse themselves in the holiday spirit as they explore over 100,000 twinkling lights and an array of ground displays. These illuminations, including enchanting snowflakes adorning Downtown Whitby and festive décor in Downtown Brooklin, add a magical touch to the area. A notable addition this year is a magnificent 30-foot Christmas tree in Civic Park, serving as a centerpiece for the celebrations.

The light displays will be available for viewing every night until 10 p.m., running through until January 7th. This seasonal spectacle offers a perfect opportunity for families, friends, and visitors to enjoy the beauty of the holiday season in Whitby.

Generals Conquer Sting 4-1, Bender Shines in OHL Debut

The Oshawa Generals defeated the Sarnia Sting 4-1, marking consecutive wins on their road trip. Key players like Kumpulainen, Buckley, Lockhart, and Torrance contributed significantly, while goalie Bender achieved his first OHL win. The team now prepares to face the Mississauga Steelheads.
